How Often Should I Clean My Pool?

There is no single answer, because every pool is different. How often a pool needs servicing comes down to how much it is used, what is around it and the time of year.

Weekly

Best for busy pools, pools under trees, and most pools through the height of summer. Heavy use and hot weather burn through chlorine quickly, and leaves add to the load. A weekly visit stays on top of it before the water turns.

Fortnightly

Suits most home pools for most of the year. It is usually enough to keep the water balanced and the equipment checked, as long as the baskets are emptied in between when leaves are heavy.

Monthly

Suits pools that are lightly used, well covered or in a clear spot, and many pools over winter. With longer gaps between visits, the pump and chlorinator need to be working properly, because there is more time for the water to drift.

What changes the answer

• Trees and gardens close to the pool

• How many people swim, and how often

• Whether the pool has a cover

• The time of year, with summer needing the most attention

• The condition of the pump, filter and chlorinator

Changing with the seasons
